Wash Day in the Country

Freshly Aired
Lancaster, PA

Solid prints and subdued colors
grace the clotheslines in rural Lancaster, PA
where Amish and Mennonite communities make their homes.

Monday is washday,
rain or shine,
winter, spring, summer or fall.

I stop to take photos
because you wouldn't see clothes on a line
in my slice of suburbia.

Now, excuse me while I go fill the dryer
with my wet laundry.

I know...just step out the door and there's the line. There is something homey about it all.

While this evokes such a feeling of freshness and simplicity, I am dos grateful for my appliances! Lovely images!

I like a dryer. No bugs on the clean laundry crawling around and then bringing them into the house. No going out and getting the laundry before the rain pours all over the clean clothes. No standing on tip toes just to wrap a clothes pin onto the line and the cloth. No forgetting the laundry outside over night. All my bras and underwear is accounted for, my mother-in-law used to complain that some were missing when hung outside. Perhaps the bras were used for slingshots no clue.

I enjoyed looking at your photographs of how the Amish and Mennonites do their laundry and just wishing that life would be easier for them than it is. Your images are very unique and I totally am awed by them.

In my neighborhood, it's against the covenants [or whatever it's called] to have clothes hanging out in the yard. Pshaw!!!

Been a long time since I used a clothesline, except when camping. I see it out all year around me and wonder how it dries.

Summer is the very definition of hanging laundry out-- and then running out in a mad dash just before the rain threatens♪♪ Perfect for Rurality! http://lauriekazmierczak.com/rad-reflectors/

How convenient to just step out the door onto the porch to hang laundry. I love the fresh outdoorsy smell of line dried clothes, and I do still hang up many things inside the house instead of using the dryer. This family is smart to save all the electricity used by a dryer.

Loved this. You would see laundry on my clothes lines, but not in the winter, the rest of the year yes. But I am one of the few in the neighborhood.

it looks so pretty. I love the smell of clothes hung out on the line. I live near the sea and I hang my can't go in the dryer things over the railing on my porch. When they dry they smell like the ocean. yum!

I'm envious. I live out in the country and still only rarely see clothes hanging on a line. I've been looking for a long time!

I put my washing out on the line when ever the weather is dry, it has been known to get stiff with the frost on some winters mornings. I have a machine load on now, that will be out as soon as it's finished.
