Suburban Girl's Family Vacation

I say 'go to the shore,'
you say 'go to the beach.'
What's the difference?
Well, I'm from Philly,
and you aren't.

Stone Harbor, New Jersey

For us the shore
is a Jersey beach
and Philadelphians
 faithfully make their pilgrimage
to one of Jersey's beaches each year.
You'd believe me if I had taken a picture of the
6 mile traffic back-up heading east from Philadelphia.
Going to the shore is serious business.

Early Morning

Our family vacations Stone Harbor -
We've been coming here with my husband's family since 1987.
We had a baby then.
One week she rolled in the sand...
the next week she wouldn't touch the sand.
Now she hardly goes to the beach,
but we can usually count on her to bake cookies instead.

I'm not big on the beach.
The sun gives me migraines.
I don't like the sticky salty water.
And if there isn't a sea breeze....forget it.

A Walk on the Beach

But I've come to love this seashore town.
It's clean.
It's classy.
It's quiet.
It's small.
It's just my speed.

The Fam after Seafood Dinner at the Lobster House in Cape May
- Mr. Engineer and I are on the left ends in blue.

Get the whole family together
and fun times just happen.

Haegele Cousins
My two girls and their husbands are on the couch.
My son is on the floor between them (with the rabbit ears from his sister.)
The other boys are the family bakery boys.
The chicken in the background...well that's a long story.

Another Family Vacation in the books.

PS we go to the beach because we have shores in every direction in Florida, water is every where.

Family vacations can be a ton of fun. How nice you go to the same place for a few days every year to keep your family ties close.

The beach is what I miss to live close to (even if it's only to take pics - when you're not tripping over the people, it means it is stormy and cold). These are excellent group photos Rebecca, especially from your kids and relatives!

Sounds like a wonderful time. :-) It's really NOT about the beach, but about who you're with.

What a lovely family. Looks like you had a fun time and my favourite shot is the misty one on the beach.

Love that first photo! Your family is such a handsome group! It's always wonderful to get together in a fun place (not so much the traffic jam that got you there! :-) ) I'm like you....can't stand lots of sun, sand getting in my shoes and in places sand shouldn't be, beach-goers. BUT I love the surf-sound, and the beauty of the ocean when the crowds are away.

Hi Rebecca - I grew up outside Philadelphia in King of Prussia. My dad grew up in the city and had an Aunt who lived in cape May. As a small boy he 'ran away from home' on his bike with I think it was .42 cents his mom had sent with him to the store. He headed to the Cape from the city, on a bike, at like age 10. I have the newspaper article and and the original note he wrote to his mom letting her know he ran away - his note says something different than what she told the reporters haha - I loved looking at your pictures and so dearly miss lobsters with claws!!! From offthe sidewalk in Tampa, FL with a smile, Carlyn :-)

I loved seeing the pictures of your large family. I have a very small family because most of the aunts, uncles, cousins, etc., are all gone. I'm left with one daughter, one grandson and three or four cousins that I will probably loose touch with once I return to Arizona. I'm envious, to say the least!

Lovely family - so nice to get so many to pose together, too! I'm sure there were lots of memories made. I miss the Atlantic beaches. Here in WA state, the beaches are wild and cold with nasty rip tides. Not many dare to swim. We just traveled to N.H. for a family reunion, but didn't get to the beach. Maybe next time. Someday I would love to visit the Jersey Shore.

Looks like you had a wonderful family vacation. We just returned from ours - but just the two of us this time. Sea breezes are wonderful when it's hot out. We don't swim much in our waters as it's just too cold. Stone Harbor sounds like a fun place to visit.
