Fiddling Around

20130810-IMG_3535-2

In Wagontown, PA,
{Love that town name}
I found something truly great
and I love a good find.

A Fiddlers' Picnic

20130810-IMG_3531-2

People have been fiddling here
for 85 years!

From the looks of things,
they will have another 85 years yet to go
as next-generation fiddlers abound.

Each year in August,
thousands gather in a park
and fiddle or tap to their heart's content.

20130810-IMG_3541-2

There is a main stage
with open time slots for performers
to register the day of the picnic.

But the best part is what is happening in the woods.
Fiddlers gather in small groups and jam together.
There does not seem to be pre-arranged grouping
as fiddlers move from group to group
throughout the day.

If you fiddle, strum or pick
get this event on your 2014 calendar.
If not, all you need to do,
is bring a lawn chair and enjoy the toe-tapping music.

A wonderfully laid-back event
embracing the passing on of the improvisational style of music
from old to young.

One of my ancestors was born in Wagontown, PA and at that time, a person could be banned by the Quakers when using a fiddle. How times have changed.
