Spell Check

This is what spell check looked like when I went to school...

When we used typewriters with whiteout instead of a delete key.
When a carbon copy was made with carbon paper.
When we listened to chalk screech across the chalkboard.
When we had to go to the library to do research.
When google it was stated as look it up in the encyclopedia.
When we eagerly sniffed the worksheets freshly printed from the mimeograph machine.
When we had no air conditioning
(and in my case enjoyed the scented breezes from
the sewer treatment plant across the street.)

You know, those good ole days.

just yesterday I told bob I have lost my phone book and dictionary skills. I am losing by alphabet and multiplication tables. the skills we don't use we lose. a few months ago i got out the phone book to look in the business section and it was so frustrating i came to the computer... it is so much easier, but what do we do if the power goes out.... I remember the smell of the mimeograph and also my aunt had one that was purple jelly and we laid the paper on it and rolled it accross to make a copy... can't remember the name of it right now

Agreed!! It's odd teaching the digital generation who expect the word to correct itself on the paper!

Funny thing, I have three spell checks like that in my bookcase - and I can use them when the computer crashes too!

Yes I do remember all that, even the stench you speak of because we lived near a factory that manufactured metal venetian blinds (what we call mini blinds today) and the chemicals they spewed from the smokestack cast a cloud over the neighborhood that smelled sort of like a roaming band of skunks. LOL
As far as the dictionary goes I used to find new words all the time and memorize them for fun. Yes, I was a really fun child. I also studied medical books too. What I always found funny was if you didn't know how to spell a word someone always said "go look it up." Because if you could figure out the first letter you had it made.

I remember randomly picking words out of the dictionary. My family had a set of encyclopedia's that I religiously read. Now, it's instant gratification from the web.
